Civil Society says to World Bank President Zoellick and Donor Governments: No Blank Check without Real Reform at the World Bank
As World Bank President Robert Zoellick ramps up a $37 billion fundraising campaign to replenish the Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) at the IMF/World Bank Annual meetings this weekend, a coalition of US development and environmental groups released a joint platform containing needed World Bank reforms.
Church Official Testifies on Human Trafficking October 18th, 2007
In this Congressional testimony, Rev. Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale, President of St. Thomas University, Miami, Florida, offers policy recommendations to the US House Foreign Affairs Committee to reduce the incidence of human trafficking. One recommendation is that human trafficking should be considered an international crime.

Oblate JPIC Office Opposes US/Mexico Border Wall October 15th, 2007
The Oblate JPIC Office opposes the proposed extension of the border wall between Mexico and the United States. The wall would have significant negative environmental, social and economic impacts, which are detailed in a statement submitted as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment process. The EIA comment period was quite brief, given the magnitude of the project and its impacts, thus one of our requests was for a longer period for public comment.
HIV/AIDS Patients Successful as Community Health Workers October 12th, 2007
The Oblates have a growing missionary presence in Kenya and are engaged in community health and education programs. In addition, the JPIC Office has been engaged -through the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility - with the management of Merck & Co., Inc on HIV/AIDS in developing countries. The following story reflects a new and interesting approach to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment on the ground in Africa.

The diocese of Hiroshima hosted the General Assembly of Justice and Peace from Sept.22-24, 2007. The theme was “Let’s be Apostles of Peace”.
Eliseo Mercado, OMI Presents at the UN October 5th, 2007
Fr. Eliseo (Jun) Mercado, OMI spoke at the UN General Assembly on Interreligious Dialogue and Intercultural Cooperation for Peace on 4 October 2007. Fr. Mercado emphasized the importance of interreligious dialog and inter-cultural cooperation and the threat posed by religious extremism. He also spoke of the need for solidarity and partnership among faith communities and traditions in building a more human society, nationally and internationally.
