Universal Action Now – 17th International AIDS Conference to be Held in Mexico City
July 28th, 2008
The worldwide gathering to focus on global HIV/AIDS policy proposals, scientific development and programs will run from August 3-8 in Mexico City, Mexico. The International AIDS Conference (AIDS2008) brings together some 25,000 stakeholders to share experiences, draw lessons and plan ahead to combat the global AIDS pandemic. Those expected to attend the conference include HIV-positive people, religious groups, business organizations, research scientists, youth, civil society and governmental leaders.
The 2008 theme for the 17th International AIDS Conference is Universal Action Now, which is calling on all stakeholders to recognize the urgent need for a global response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. It is a reminder that the AIDS pandemic is not over, and that comprehensive action is needed to ensuring universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Action is needed in particular to eliminate AIDS related stigma and discrimination, especially at workplaces.
A pre-conference has been organized by the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance and Churches in Mexico to collectively dialog how to use faith networks to hold world leaders accountable for their AIDS commitments and create strategies to restore hope to the Church in the midst of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Universal Action Now, the theme for the conference, is an invitation to get involved and make a difference in fighting AIDS. The most critical need is to achieve universal access to prevention, treatment and care by 2010. This will require a dedication of resources specifically to address AIDS-related issues, as well as strong political leadership.
In Zambia, one place is making a real difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Our Lady’s Hospice supported by the Missionary Oblates in Zambia is located in Lusaka’s Kalingalinga settlement and caters for hundreds of AIDS patients on out- patient basis. It also admits many sick Zambians to the facility.
