Global Fund Round 9 Launched

October 10th, 2008

The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has launched its Round 9 Call for Proposals. Round 9 allows low and middle-income countries to submit proposals for financial grants to help combat the three diseases. The new Round has been opened six months earlier than usual, running from October 1, 2008 until March 2009, with grants to be approved by May 2009.

Round 9 provides an opportunity for faith based organizations to strengthen accountability in the granting mechanism to combat HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. You can get involved by joining your Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) which submits proposals and implements grants. Your goal as a participant is to ensure that the Global Fund continues to maintain and sustain commitment to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. A multi-sectoral representation is needed for the global fund to ensure accountability and transparency – hence the participation of faith communities is vital.

The Global Fund has improved the fight against AIDS, TB and Malaria in some countries where all stakeholders got involved. In Lesotho, Christian Health Association worked with the Government Health Ministry on the Global Fund Round 8 which paid salaries to healthcare workers and gave incentives for rural healthcare workers. In Zambia, about 180,000 insecticide treated bed nets were distributed to families and 17,000 children under the age of five to fight malaria. In Haiti and Democratic Republic of Congo, thousands of HIV-infected people are now receiving Anti Retroviral drugs (ARV) and treatments for TB.
