Haiti

The Oblate presence in Haiti dates back to the 1950’s when Oblates from the St John the Baptist province – primarily ministering in New England – accepted the invitation to establish a mission in Haiti. The Oblate presence was initially focused across southern Haiti all the way to Tiburon. Today Oblates are also very active in the northeast.

Building up the local church in this impoverished country has been a major focus of the work. This has included raising the necessary resources to build churches, clinics, schools and a number of cooperative, community based initiatives. Important priorities remain supporting and, sometimes leading, the efforts of religious leaders to protect and promote human rights and justice. This includes responding to the plight of Haitians on the border with the Dominican Republic.
