Wal-Mart to Measure Sustainability of its Products July 18th, 2009

walmart_exteriorWal-Mart is known for its rock-bottom prices, but customers soon will also be able to choose what products to buy on the basis of their social and environmental impacts – or at least that is the idea, according to the company.  Wal-Mart announced today that it is launching a Sustainability Index – an electronic indexing system that will provide information about a product’s carbon footprint, the gallons of water used to create it, the air pollution left in its wake and social impacts related to production.

The company has recruited scholars, suppliers, and environmental groups to help it create the index – a universal rating system that scores products based on how environmentally and socially sustainable they are over the course of their lives. The goal is to have other retailers adopt the indexing system, which will be created over the next five years.

Protect the Poor While Caring for God’s Creation April 22nd, 2009

carbonfootprint_logoAs Americans celebrate Earth Day by leaving our cars at home or volunteering to make the world a greener place, the Catholic Church is making a distinctive contribution to the climate change debate.

This unprecedented initiative asks Catholics “Who Is Under Your Carbon Footprint?”

The Catholic Climate Covenant asks the nation’s 65 million Catholics to connect their religious values with care for the Earth, to learn how climate change affects poverty-stricken regions, and to lobby legislators on behalf of the poor.

Earth Hour – March 28 – Vote for the Earth! March 3rd, 2009

Send a clear message to politicians that we want action on global warming now. Join millions around the globe who plan to turn off their lights at 8:30pm for an hour on March 28. This simple action of turning off our lights will send the message that we care deeply about the world we will leave for our children.

Sign up for Earth Hour

Join others in cities and towns around the US and across the globe in making Earth Hour a wake-up call for our representatives in Washington!

This is the world’s first global election – a contest between earth and global warming. On March 28 you can VOTE EARTH by switching off your lights for one hour.

Or you can vote for global warming by leaving your lights on.

The results of the election are being presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. We want one billion votes for Earth, to tell world leaders that we have to take action against global warming.

Bangladesh Faces the Challenge of Climate Change November 3rd, 2008

Global Warming Costs will Rise Dramatically with Business as Usual October 29th, 2008

Already, people – mainly the poor – are paying the price of global warming as a result of droughts, flooding, wildfires and intensified hurricanes.
