USCCB Launches New Campaign Against Human Trafficking February 20th, 2013

The USCCB Coalition of Catholic Organizations against Human Trafficking is developing a new initiative called The Amistad Movement. The campaign, which is being developed during 2013, will work on both prevention and helping people after they have been trafficked to reintegrate into supportive communities.

The Amistad Movement

Just as the slaves aboard The Amistad took control of the ship and escaped their captors — We will empower and walk beside all modern day slaves until they achieve their freedom.

Lenten Resources on Immigration February 12th, 2013

As we begin our Lenten journey of prayer, reflection and fasting, we hope these Lenten resources related to immigrants will be useful. Suggestions for Homilists: The Lenten Season and  Lenten Resolutions on Behalf of Immigrants can be found on the USCCB Justice for Immigrants website. These offer materials that the Oblate community and parishes, and other supporters of immigrants, may use in advocating for and educating others on comprehensive immigration reform.

2013 is a very important year to push for the passing of immigration reform and it is absolutely critical that your Senators and Representatives hear from you.

Additionally, you can send a Justice for Immigrants e-post card to Congress by clicking on this link: www.capwiz.com/justiceforimmigrants/issues/alert/?alertid=62312721&type=CO

Oblate JPIC Welcomes Action for Comprehensive Immigration Reform January 30th, 2013

The Missionary Oblates JPIC have joined other people of faith in applauding the announcement made by President Obama and the bipartisan group of Senators calling for necessary reform to fix the broken immigration system.

Yesterday, on January 29, President Obama called on Congress to enact immigration reform that would create a pathway to citizenship for individuals who are currently undocumented, including undocumented youth or ‘DREAMers’, fix the immigration visa system to reunite separated families, and promote the integration of newcomers.

On January 28, a bipartisan group of eight U.S Senators had released a framework, which includes a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented in the nation. It also would reduce family backlogs in the immigration system, which requires family members to wait years to reunite with their loved ones.

President Obama’s immigration reform pillars and principles by the Senators represent a good starting place for Members of Congress to come together to create a reformed immigration system that better serves families and the common good.

As the new Congress considers comprehensive immigration reform legislation, it is important that people of faith make their voices heard and demand humane action on this issue in 2013. Stay tuned for updates on how to take action for comprehensive immigration reform.
