Stand Up Against Poverty September 26th, 2009

standup2Millions of people around the world will Stand Up and Take Action from October 16 to 18 to show their support for the fight against poverty and for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This year a deepening financial crisis and a slowing global economy pose great challenges for development in general and for the MDGs in particular.

In 2007, 47 million people Stood Up. Last year, 116 million people Stood Up and Took Action.

SEAL THE DEALThe United Nations has launched the “Seal the Deal” campaign that encourages users to sign an online, global petition that will serve as a reminder that our leaders must negotiate a fair, balanced and effective agreement in Copenhagen in December, and that they must seal a deal to power green growth, protect our planet and build a more sustainable, prosperous global economy that will benefit all nations and people.

VIVAT to Promote Regional Networking in Latin America July 7th, 2009

VIVAT International will be holding a Workshop in Cochabamba, Bolivia from July 19th to the 24th for some of the eight Congregational members who work in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. The workshop will inform participants about VIVAT: what VIVAT is, its purpose and goals, and its achievements at the United Nations.

The main aim of the workshop, however, will be to allow members of the different Congregations to get to know each other and to share information about their work. The hope is that participants will form networks for greater effectiveness and better results in their ministries locally, nationally, regionally and with the UN.


UN Secretary General Calls for True Sustainability in Global Economic and Political Relations July 6th, 2009

The United Nations Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development was held in New York on June 24-26. In his visionary opening remarks, H.E. Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, President of The United Nations General Assembly, called for an economic system based on solidarity and a “…globalized policy and ethics based on the many cultural experiences and traditions of our peoples.”
