OMI JPIC USA Welcomes Interfaith Coalition’s Response to “Magnifica Humanitas,” Pope Leo’s Encyclical on AI June 3rd, 2026

“OMI JPIC USA welcomes the following Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility‘s (ICCR) response to “Magnifica Humanitas,” the encyclical on artificial intelligence that was released on May 25th by Pope Leo XIV.”

In response to the release of Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas Josh Zinner, CEO of ICCR, issued the following statement:

“ICCR is grateful for the moral clarity and analytical rigor conveyed in Pope Leo’s encyclical about AI. On so many issues ranging from the over-concentration of corporate power, to income inequality, the future of work, and the danger of surveillance and autonomous weapons, the encyclical highlights the need to not lose sight of the vital human connection.  As the Pope underscores in this important work –  ‘in an age of continuous technological transformation, we need a political creativity that will promote “work” and place the family and coming generations at the center; otherwise our economic progress will translate into new forms of insecurity and exclusion.’

The event, held at Deusto Business School and the Diocesan Institute of Theology and Pastoral Studies, addressed a question that, according to the Bishop of Bilbao, Joseba Segura, “has been circulating for years regarding the financial management of many Church institutions : Are we investing in a way that is consistent with what we preach?”

Intervention of Fr. Séamus Finn

Fr. Séamus Finn, an Oblate of Mary Immaculate and also a co-author of the Mensuram Bonam document, with almost fifty years of experience in faith-consistent investing in the United States, complemented Beccalli’s perspective with a more practical and pastoral dimension.

For Finn, the key to Mensuram Bonam lies in awakening a sense of responsibility: ” If you own shares in a company—Exxon, Iberdrola, any company—as an owner you have a responsibility. The document seeks to awaken people to that awareness .”

Finn also emphasized the importance of institutional transparency as a condition for credibility: “ People who support the Church with their donations must be able to understand that their money is being used responsibly .” He also expressed optimism regarding the progress made by the financial sector: “Many money managers have taken the document seriously because their clients are asking for it .”
