2016 Lenten Reflection on Consistent Life – Week IV (Spanish version available!) March 7th, 2016

Our faith calls us to pray, fast, and give to charity during Lent. As we look inward and reflect on our own lives, let us also remember our struggling brothers and sisters around the world and even people right in our backyards. To help support your Lenten devotion, Missionary Oblates JPIC is pleased to offer weekly resources centered on a justice theme. October is Respect Life Month: Every Life is Worth Living October 13th, 2015

During the month of October the Catholic Church in the U.S. celebrates “Respect Life Month.” This is a time for Catholics across the country to reflect on and witness to the dignity of the human person. This year’s theme, Every Life is Worth Living, focuses on the issues of abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty.
Respect Life resources in English and Spanish can be found on the US Conference of Catholic Bishop’s website, where you will also find a Respect Life Month Statement by Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, OFM.
Join us in praying for a greater respect for human life from conception to natural death:

Missionary Oblates Welcome new Anti-Trafficking bill in U.S. Congress July 29th, 2015
Missionary Oblates JPIC office, in collaboration with the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) and The Coalition of Catholic Organizations against Human Trafficking, applaud the introduction in the House of Representatives the Business Supply Chain Transparency on Trafficking and Slavery Act of 2015.
The proposed legislation is co-sponsored by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ). If passed into law, the bill would require large public corporations to disclose any of their attempts to prevent human trafficking, child labor and slavery in their supply chains in their annual reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
This news comes just after the release on July 27 of the State Department’s 2015 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, which stresses that governments, “set clear expectations for businesses on human rights issues and adopt policies that promote greater transparency and better reporting on anti-trafficking efforts in supply chains.”
Breaking the Chains: Mass Incarceration and Systems of Exploitation April 10th, 2015
The Ecumenical Advocacy Days Annual Conference will be held in Washington, DC from April 17-20, and will focus on the problem of mass incarceration in the United States.

We call on Congress to reform federal criminal justice and immigrant detention policies toward the goal of ending unfair, unnecessary, costly and racially biased mass incarceration:
- Adopt criminal justice and sentencing reform policies that incorporate an end to mandatory minimum sentencing;
- Eliminate the detention bed quota for immigrants and implement alternatives to immigrant detention.
