Oblate US JPIC Committee Gathers in Godfrey, Illinois October 19th, 2009
US JPIC Committee Members and Staff Visit the Shed Dedicated to Darrell Rupiper, OMI on the Community Supported Agriculture Project at Godfrey, IL
On October 15 and 16, the United States Province Oblate Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) committee held a bi-annual strategy meeting in Godfrey, Illinois to review, share progress and discuss how to continue the JPIC work most effectively. Part of the agenda included brief updates from staff from the Washington JPIC office, the Oblate Ecological Initiative based in Godfrey and the General Service office in Rome. Committee members also reported on their JPIC work.

Faith-based Organizations and Immigration Advocates Urge Senator Schumer to Ensure Fair Immigration Policy October 12th, 2009
The Missionary Oblates joined with over 30 organizations representing faith based organizations, immigrant, human rights and civil liberties advocates, and community groups in sending a letter to Senator Chuck Schumer urging him to include fair and humane immigration reform standards in the upcoming U.S. Immigration and Border policy legislation.
For the last few months, Senator Schumer has been holding public hearings about the comprehensive Immigration and Border reforms. The encouraging tone from these Senate hearings has been that the time for immigration reform is now. The letter calls on Senator Schumer to ensure that “any proposed changes to immigration enforcement must reflect fundamental fairness, cardinal American values and international human rights norms.”

Civil Society Organizations Engage IMF on Governance Reform September 29th, 2009
On September 8, 2009, representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs) met with the IMF Executive Board in an informal seminar at Fund Headquarters to discuss CSO recommendations on IMF governance reform. New Rules for Global Finance is coordinating the consultations, known as the Fourth Pillar Process. The Missionary Oblates, an active member of New Rules, was represented at the meeting by Seamus Finn, OMI.

Oblates Call on California Governor to Sign Law Recognizing a Human Right to Water September 23rd, 2009
Four Oblate priests in Los Angeles wrote Governor Schwarzenegger urging his support for AB 1242, the Human Right to Water Act of 2009. The priests minister to some 12,000 parishioners in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
The priests said “We believe that access to safe, affordable and clean water is a human right, and no one should be denied this right because of being poor.”
