Homework Done: Human Rights Groups and Feticide

December 10th is International Human Rights Day

One of CL’s projects several years ago was to try to stop Amnesty International (AI) from taking up a defense of abortion. Having failed, we wanted to offer information about which organizations would be best for those wanting to donate to human-rights groups that weren’t abortion pushers. Ward Ricker has now gathered this information by researching the human-rights organizations as listed in the Yahoo Directory; not the best listing, but the one he used. He found only three that were pro-life on abortion – one being our member group Pax Christi. Unfortunately, a large number have statements that directly support abortion or could be seen as doing so indirectly; Ward provides web links to their statements, so you can make your own judgments (and provide feedback to the groups accordingly). But there are also many who have no stand and are therefore safe for donations. Missing is the Benenson Society, which is abortion-neutral and was formed in reaction to AI’s shift.

Nobel Peace Prize Winners and Consistent Life Endorsers

Join Letter Supporting Bradley Manning

CL Endorsers Mairead Corrigan Maguire and Adolfo Perez Esquivel joined other Nobel Peace Laureates for whistleblower Bradley Manning, in a mid-November open letter. The full letter is worth reading, and in it they said:

“With today’s advanced military technology and the continued ability of business and political elites to filter what information is made public, there exists a great barrier to many citizens being fully aware of the realities and consequences of conflicts in which their country is engaged . . . For those citizens worldwide who do not have direct, intimate knowledge of war, yet are still affected by rising international tensions and failing economies, WikiLeaks releases attributed to Bradley Manning have provided unparalleled access to important facts. . .

Words attributed to Bradley Manning reveal that he went through a profound moral struggle between the time he enlisted and when he became a whistleblower. Through his experience in Iraq, witnessing suffering of innocent civilians and soldiers alike, he became disturbed by top-level policy that undervalued human life.”

More on Call to Action

We mentioned before that we had a table and caucus at the progressive Catholic group “Call to Action” conference. Our member group All Our Lives also had Mary Krane Derr there to present a workshop from her group’s point of view – so we had even more representation than usual this year.

Quotation of the Week

Gordon Zahn, 1971

“It is not just a matter of consistency; in a very real sense it is the choice between integrity and hypocrisy. No one who publicly mourns the senseless burning of a napalmed child should be indifferent to the intentional killing of a living fetus in the womb.”
