NGOs call on Secretary Blinken to Assist Haitian Government in Fighting Corruption May 4th, 2021

Global Financial Integrity (GFI) and other non-governmental organizations, including OMI JPIC released a letter today calling on the United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken to assist the Haitian government in fighting corruption.

Recent violent protests in Haiti underscore the people’s frustration with systemic corruption that exists within the government. The Biden Administration has presented a foreign policy goal of addressing corruption around the world and, as such, must support the Haitian government in developing critically important anti-corruption measures. This would be beneficial to the people of Haiti, the United States of America and the world.

Visit Global Financial Integrity’s website to read the full press release.

On a related note: United Nations representatives of congregations of Catholic Sisters, Brothers, priests and partners in mission, many of whom have active ministries in Haiti, also wrote H.E. Mrs. Linda Thomas-Greenfield,, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United nations to express  deep concern over the rapidly escalating unrest in Haiti. Read the letter here.

DOWA Metals & Mining is a threat to the Chilkat Watershed April 16th, 2021

TAKE ACTION: HELP US STOP THIS MINE!

The Chilkat River—“Jilkaat Heeni” in the Tlingit language, meaning “storage container for salmon”—runs from its headwaters in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, into the sea near Haines, Alaska.

The watershed was settled millennia ago and is the traditional territory of the Chilkat Tlingit people. Today, the watershed remains central, economically and culturally, to the Chilkat Indian Village of Klukwan, a federally recognized tribe. Traditional harvests, particularly of wild salmon and eulachon, are the lifeblood of the Village.

Japanese smelter company DOWA Metals and Mining has taken control of the Palmer Mine Project at the headwaters of the Chilkat Watershed. Send this letter DOWA, asking the Board of Directors to stop funding this mine.

Sign the Petition to Walmart to Protect Seafarers April 15th, 2021

Seafarers Are Essential Workers! Sign this Petition to Protect them.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN:

Each year, the Coalition of Catholic Organizations Against Human Trafficking (CCOAHT) launches a campaign to raise awareness of forced labor in the fishing industry. This year, due to the global pandemic, a new humanitarian crisis has emerged that is severely impacting all men and women who work at sea. CCOAHT – together with Stella Maris and the Apostleship of the Sea USA – are urging people of faith to leverage their voices as consumers to uphold the safety and labor rights of one of the world’s most invisible group of essential workers.

Sign the petition below urging Walmart, one of our largest retailers, to acknowledge their reliance on seafarers for the healthy functioning of their business model, and to show concern for seafarers’ wellbeing by signing the Neptune Declaration.

Reducing consumption, reusing items and recycling whenever possible reduces air and water pollution, keeps landfills from filling up so quickly and saves energy and money for both consumers and governments that have to deal with trash. This is a great way to deal with climate change. Our new brochure offers tips on ways you can reduce, reuse and recycle as individuals and in your communities.

Can Inclusive Capitalism Work for the Common Good?

“Once capital becomes an idol and guides people’s decisions, once greed for money presides over the entire socioeconomic system, it ruins society, it condemns and enslaves men and women, it destroys human fraternity, it sets people against one another and, as we clearly see, it even puts at risk our common home.” – Pope Francis
