Materials for Upcoming Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region July 3rd, 2019

EDITOR’S NOTE: A special assembly has been announced in a bulletin issued by the Vatican:  “In accordance with the proclamation by Pope Francis on October 15, 2017, the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, called to reflect on the theme: New Paths for the Church and for an Integral Ecology, will take place in October 2019. New paths for evangelization must be designed for and with the People of God who live in this region: inhabitants of communities and rural areas, of cities and large metropolises, people who live on river banks, migrants and displaced persons, and especially for and with indigenous peoples.”

In preparation for the synod, Fr. Séamus Finn, OMI, Director of OMIUSA JPIC, has assembled the following resources.

The following three resources (1 article and 2 videos) are excellent resources as we enter the final phase of preparation for the forthcoming synod; Amazonia, New paths for the Church and for an Integral Ecology”

Missionary Oblates Join Global Investors in Urging G20 Governments to Address Climate Change June 27th, 2019

477 global investors managing more than $34 trillion in assets, nearly half the world’s invested capital, have released a statement ahead of the G20 Summit. They are urging world leaders to accelerate their response to the climate crisis to ensure the goals of the 2015 Paris climate deal can be met. The G-20, representing the 20 largest economies in the world are meeting in Osaka, Japan from June 28-29.

Statement begins:
“As institutional investors with millions of beneficiaries around the world, we reiterate our full support for the Paris Agreement and strongly urge all governments to implement the actions that are needed to achieve the goals of the Agreement, with the utmost urgency.”

“Investors are taking action on climate change. The global shift to clean energy is underway, but much more needs to be done by governments to accelerate the low carbon transition and to improve the resilience of our economy, society and the financial system to climate risks. Investors continue to make significant investments into the low carbon transition across a range of asset classes.” Click here to read the full statement.

Stand With Refugees on June 20 June 14th, 2019

According to the United Nations (UN), more than 68.5 MILLION people have been forcibly displaced from their homes. Since 2000 the UN has recognized June 20th as World Refugee Day to honor the courage and resilience of those forced to flee threats of persecution, conflict, and violence.

According to the 1951 Refugee Convention, a refugee is one who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.”

For many years the Catholic Church, through its various agencies has actively raised awareness about the plight of refugees through education and advocacy, and directly provided services for them.

These efforts take place on the national and international level through organizations like Catholic Relief Services, Jesuit Relief Service, Catholic Charities and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (Justice for Immigrants).

Visit Justice for Immigrants’ website to read more about the U.S. Bishops’ campaign to support immigrants and refugees and download their 2019 World Refugee Day toolkitto learn more about the observance and for community engagement ideas.
